Job cuts announced by U.S.-based employers fell 4.4 percent, from 33,825 in August to 32,346 in September. September’s total was 27 percent lower than the 44,324 job cuts announced in the same month last year. Job cuts in the third quarter totaled 94,478, 6.2 percent lower than the 100,799 cuts in the second quarter of this year, and 22.5 percent lower than the 121,858 cuts announced in the third quarter of last year. So far this year, employers in the U.S. have announced 321,478 job cuts, 26.2 percent lower than the 435,612 cuts recorded through September last year. The report on October job cuts will be released by global outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc. on Thursday, November 2 at 7:30 a.m. ET.
October CEO Report Due Wednesday, November 8
The number of Chief Executive Officers leaving their positions rose 5 percent from the 96 recorded CEO changes in August to 101 in September. The month’s total is down 15 percent from the same month last year, when 119 CEOs left their posts. Third quarter exits totaled 299, 12.4 percent higher than the 266 second quarter exits, and 6.6 percent lower than the 320 CEOs who left their posts in the third quarter last year. So far this year, a total of 866 CEOs have announced exits, down 8.3 percent from the 944 CEOs that departed from their posts in the first three quarters of 2016. The Challenger report on October CEO turnover will be released Wednesday, November 8, at 10:00 a.m. ET.
