    The Four Most Important Soft Skills that You Should Always Include in Your Resume


    If you want to change your career and get hired in a new field, experience in that position is what matters most. A degree from Cambridge or Oxford definitely helps, but it is not everything. Job training in that particular field obviously provides an advantage, particularly when accompanied by a successful academic path; however, when this is lacking in your resume and you can’t gain a similar and related experience in that specific matter, including a list of your skills will definitely help in making your resume more effective.

    According to a study published by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES), soft skills represent £88 billion for the British economy. Yet a survey of more than 2,000 employees revealed that 20% of them would not describe their soft skills to an employer with confidence, and more than half of them never included them in their resumes. However, many managers share the opinion of Ben Elmer-White, Learning and Development Manager at Babcock International Group, on how those skills are necessary for business success: “Today we cannot purely rely upon the technical capabilities and skills of our people to deliver great performance. We need people who will embrace change, face complexity and meet challenges, and all within an ever changing and diverse landscape. We can only do that by supporting our people from a behavioural stance and creating a learning and development environment that enables personal growth and behavioural realisation to cope, flex and look beyond current problems to create sustainable and longer term solutions. Supporting technical capability with behavioural learning and development enables a far more resilient, flexible and tenacious workforce who are able to deliver to the challenges we face, promote brand and ethos and drive future business.”

    Communication 

    This may seem obvious, but having good communication skills is essential for any job, particularly during job interviews. The ability to communicate appropriately, maintain eye contact, demonstrate an extended vocabulary, adapt the language register to the speaker and listen to and present ideas effectively can be important factors.


    Your communication skills will shape the impression your interlocutor will have on you. 

    Teamwork 

    As an employer, one of the first questions I ask myself during a job interview is, "can you integrate with our group?" And I bet all other employers are asking the same thing. Corporate culture is a crucial aspect of a business and an employer will always want to make sure that you can bring something to your work environment. 


    Integrating within a team demonstrates your sociability, as well as your willingness to support good ideas and contribute to the group. 

    Decision-making 

    This is about having the confidence to make the right choices and not being afraid to take the initiative. Have you ever made an important decision at work or at university that has had a positive impact? Do not forget to mention it! This will show to the company how you are success-oriented and, at the same time, will make you be a great fit for leadership positions and career growth.
     
    Decision-making is a vital soft skill to show to any type of company and useful in any area of the business world. Managerial positions often require taking more decisions compared to low-level jobs, however all positions in within a company from intern to executives deal with decision-making processes. That put decision-making is an important skill to list on your resume, regardless of the position you are applying for.
     
     
    Taking Responsibility 

    Taking responsibilities is a very good way to show that you are able to follow and conduct your assigned projects from start to finish. Volunteer experiences are very appreciated in resumes and great ways to prove you are not scared of taking responsibilities. That goes particularly well if it proves that you can also take responsibilities and decisions for a team.
    Along with your ability to take responsibility, it is also recommended to show adaptability, a concept somewhat similar, meaning that you are able to change and adapt to new and different business situations and work assignments, often adjusting to their different levels of responsibilities that the circumstances require.

    Time Management 

    Time management is an invaluable quality that should also be listed among your soft skills. Helping tem members to meet deadlines, working on projects respecting deadlines are all indicators of your time management skills and can consolidate or break a good first impression.
