Leading Insurance Career Site, InsuranceJobs.com Shares Insurance Employment Trends from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Economic Situation Report

The insurance industry added 14,000 jobs in April according to preliminary numbers reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Economic Situation Report released on Friday, May 5, 2017.

“In April, the insurance industry accounted for almost all of the growth within the finance and insurance sector and the financial activities supersector, ” said Jay Rollins, owner of the insurance employment website InsuranceJobs.com. “Insurance accounted for 74 percent of all growth within the financial activities supersector in April. Real estate accounted for the remainder.”

The insurance carriers and related activities subsector, a part of the finance and insurance sector, now sits at 2,629,300 employed persons with an unemployment rate of 2.2 percent. Over the last 12 months, the insurance industry has grown by 56,400 jobs while the unemployment rate dropped by one percentage point from 3.2 percent in April 2016.
The insurance subsector, as outlined in the Economic Situation Report, includes claims adjusters, claims investigators, insurance sales agents, and insurance underwriters.

Across all industries, total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 211,000 jobs in April, while the unemployment rate reached a record low of 4.4 percent. Job gains occurred in leisure and hospitality, healthcare and social assistance, financial activities, and mining.
