Making intelligent hiring decisions requires keen observational skills. Experience economy expert James H. Gilmore this week released
Look: A Practical Guide for Improving Your Observational Skills, a new book that offers a sound framework for expanding, focusing, and improving the way you draw information from your experiences. Inspired by
Edward de Bono’s Six Thinking Hats as a system for improved group decision making and idea evaluation, Gilmore offers six lenses through which to see the world.
I recently had an opportunity to discuss this new book with Gilmore himself. The video below offers one suggestion for how to apply looking skills to talent acquisition.

I have been a fan of Gilmore’s work ever since I read his influential book
The Experience Economy. A number of years ago
James and I discussed how managing the candidate experience can improve recruiting outcomes. Applying a thoughtful combination of observational skills and intentional design to the evaluation process can result in more objective and effective hiring decisions and create more dynamic and meaningful experiences for candidates. Enabling recruiters with job-relevant evaluation data changes the lens through which they look at candidates and leads to more evidence-based hiring.
Shaker has been a pioneer of intentionally designed candidate experiences that engage, educate, and evaluate. Organizations have been deploying our Virtual Job Tryout technology to change the nature of candidate flow and information exchange in the recruiting process. We also are a long-time sponsor of the Candidate Experience Awards and Research program. We know the interest in candidate experience is growing. As of this writing, over 160,000 candidates have completed the 2016 Candidate Experience survey. Now in its sixth year, this program offers organizations a deep look—with data—at how applicants view their candidate experience.
Learn More from Gilmore at Our Candidate Experience Event
We are sponsoring a free half-day Candidate Experience Workshop and reception in Cleveland on October 13. Hear more from Gilmore about how to look at talent through new lenses. I will share data from the Candidate Experience survey, and Kevin W. Grossman of Talent Board will explore how the candidate experience can be managed to improve your recruiting game.
