VANCOUVER— On Thursday, May 26, the Fraser Institute will release a new study spotlighting the legal duty to consult – a principle in Canadian law that obligates governments to consult Aboriginal peoples prior to making decisions that could affect Aboriginal or treaty rights.

In an effort to address the Crown’s obligation, provinces have produced policies and guidelines to govern the consultation processes. The study, The Duty to Consult with Aboriginal Peoples, highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the various frameworks.
