PHILOMATH, OR (PRWEB) FEBRUARY 25, 2016
Starting in February 2016, digital photo company DPSDave.com, LLC will take advantage of their waxing and waning business cycle by paying employees their regular hourly wage for community volunteering during slow business cycles. David Orr, President of DPSDave.com, LLC believes the plan is important to do what's best for his employees, his company, and the community.
DPSDave.com, LLC often receives boxes of customers' old family pictures and film slides, which then undergo old photo restoration using specialized scanning equipment and computer software. Because of the way its business schedule is setup, DPSDave.com, LLC plans its staffing one month in advance. This prevents incoming in orders from being backlogged for any longer than a week.
Essentially, the company schedules workers for projects they have yet to receive as a precaution.
"It makes good business sense to keep customer turnaround time short, to do that we have to over-staff occasionally," said Orr.
However, the workload can consequently be inconsistent. Some days, the company might receive huge boxes with thousands upon thousands of slides, while on other days they may only see 100. This boom/bust situation leaves employees drowned in work at times, and other times being left with nothing to do but be sent home.
"My personal feeling on this is that from a strictly financial, capitalist perspective, you just tell them to go home, and I don't like that," said Orr. "These guys have to pay their bills."
To resolve this issue, the company will now offer to pay workers their normal hourly wages for volunteering during work hours when they are sent home.
"Now, we've created a new policy, where if employees are asked to stay home, if they're willing to volunteer in the community with those hours, then we still pay them for the time originally scheduled, hour for hour," continued Orr.
This incentive will allow DPSdave.com, LLC to balance staffing needs and keep workers satisfied. Beyond ensuring employees get a steady paycheck, Orr believes that the volunteer work will have other benefits as well.
"People go out and they volunteer in the community and they come back charged up and ready to work. They're more happy about their lives, they're happier about their work, they're happier about their community," he explained.
