The awards cover every facet of construction through the 18 targeted categories, from Building Design to Design innovation. Here are some of the big winners from the night.
National Graphene Institute, Manchester
Graphene, known as the wonder material, is the next big thing in the construction and mechanics worlds. It is the strongest material in the world today. The institute in Manchester is the first of its kind in the world and places the UK at the forefront of Graphene technology and research. This could have a massive economic impact in the near future as the material has a wide range of applications. Officially opened by Chancellor Osbourne in March, the project was carried out by BAM and won Major Building Project of the Year (>£50m).Suffolk Energy from Waste, Ipswich
With the completion of this project, waste from homes and businesses which cannot be recycled can now be used in the generation of electricity. Over 30,000 homes across Suffolk are being powered through the project. Due to its positive environmental impact, the project won the Civil Engineering Project of the Year Award (for the £10m to £50m category). The environmental performance and architectural design of the building are some of the factors that made this project a worthy winner of its category. The building is spread over a 4,750 sqm space and houses laboratories, workshops and office spaces. It won the Building Project of the Year Award (for the <£10m category) and was carried out by Eric Wright Construction.Church Bridge Reconstruction, Frampton Cotterell, South Gloucestershire
The reconstruction of this bridge, made from high grade composite materials, similar to those seen in modern aircraft, makes it a fifth lighter than a typical bridge. The materials used in the construction and design makes it the first of its kind in the country. It won the Civil Engineering Project of the Year Award (for the <£10m category) and was also shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Better Public Building Award. The project was carried out by Street Care - South Gloucestershire Council.The British Construction Industry Awards are in their 28th year. They are the most admired and coveted in the construction industry. The awards feature a panel of exceptional judges and provide players in the construction industry with high grade industry recognition and high quality networking opportunities.
Well done to all the winners. The biggest winners, though, are the UK construction industry and the UK as a whole. The innovation that UK companies are bringing to the sector, and the quality of the projects being completed, are keeping the UK at the forefront of the world construction community.
