WASHINGTON, D.C. (PRWEB) NOVEMBER 04, 2015
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation has announced Afterburner Inc. as one of three finalists for the 5th Annual Hiring Our Heroes Capital One Award for Small Business Veteran and Military Spouse Employment. Afterburner is among 21 finalists nominated for six awards that recognize “demonstrated leadership by a small business or organization hiring veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses.”
“Afterburner has been a true small business leader in the movement to hire and support our nation’s veterans and military spouses,” said Eric Eversole, vice president at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and executive director of Hiring Our Heroes. “Afterburner understands the value in hiring the men and women who have served our country and has dedicated extraordinary efforts toward improving the lives of America’s veterans and military spouses.”
The Atlanta-based leadership training firm comprises more than 60 current and former military professionals who train organizations around the world in the military-inspired continuous improvement methodology, Flawless Execution®. Through this work, Afterburner founder and CEO, Jim “Murph” Murphy, recognized the overwhelming demand for veteran skillsets in the workforce and in 2013, he and his team introduced a day-long transition preparation course for veterans that would help bridge the communication gap between employers and veterans.
“Every day around the world, we train our clients how to operate like elite military teams,” Murphy says. “These organizations recognize and seek the skillsets that military service members possess, yet our veteran unemployment and underemployment numbers remain high. The Military Transition Seminar guides service members through a strategic approach to transition planning, empowering them to identify and proactively seek a stronger future for themselves and their families.”
Since 2013, Afterburner has partnered with organizations like fellow award nominee, USAA, to deliver the Military Transition Seminar (MTS) at 15 installations around the U.S. and South Korea. Through those programs, more than 1700 service members and their spouses have developed over 1600 transition and career development plans.
The MTS is based on the career planning book, Down Range: A Transitioning Veteran’s Career Guide to Life’s Next Phase (2013). The strategy behind the book and corresponding seminar is to provide insight and training on oft-forgotten elements of transition: the shift in mindset from military to civilian occupation, translating skillsets and experience to civilian employers, and aligning daily efforts to building a career rather than simply finding a job.
