Developing a customized approach to career services is something that many schools struggle with. It’s not easy for professionals working with a diverse student body to create one career services strategy that will meet each student’s needs. This is why many academic institutions are changing their approach to career services and providing more customized career development options. MBA@UNC, UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School’s online MBA program, has adapted to take this more personal route.
“We have a very individualized approach, and we offer an unlimited amount of one on-one coaching and consultation to help you manage your career,” said Shawnice Meador, director of career management and leadership development at MBA@UNC. She meets with each of her students individually to provide advice unique to their needs.
Meador uses one-on-one consultations to follow her students’ progress throughout their time at MBA@UNC. Based on what the students are interested in getting the most out of their business school experience she helps them create a plan of action to achieve those goals. By tailoring career expertise to each student’s interests and goals, Meador is able to facilitate a close relationship with her students, which tends to lead to improved academic success.
MBA@UNC also offers powerful networking opportunities for students to take advantage of online. Students from all over the world can join a virtual classroom to meet and even collaborate with new people they likely never would have met otherwise.
“I have met people who have lived in different places around the world. They’re all coming together for one sole purpose of continuing to help themselves learn, develop, grow and be successful,” said Meador. “That part alone has been an incredible learning opportunity for myself in particular.”
