Etobicoke, ON—Employees of Ontario Redimix (a division of Holcim Canada) have voted 74 percent in favour of a new three-year contract.
The 115 employees are members of CLAC and deliver ready mix concrete throughout the GTA.
During the bargaining process, the bargaining committee focused on pension and was able to negotiate an initial increase of $2.50 per hour to the existing $2.25, with further increases of 25 cents per hour in years two and three. By the end of the contract, the employer will be contributing $5.25 per hour into each member’s pension. Members will also receive wage increase of 25 cents per hour during each year of the agreement, bringing them to $29 per hour. The group also moved from their employer’s benefit plan to the CLAC Benefit Plan, which provides gains to life insurance, long and short term disability, vision, and other benefit provisions.
The settlement exceeded the industry norm, and employees were confident that an arbitration award would have resulted in lower monetary gains.
“It was an exceptionally tough round of negotiations, with the looming sale of the company and membership mandates,” says Tiny (Rob) Miller. “But we walked away with a fair overall package that protects our future.”
