    Debt Stress: How it Affects Your Employees and Productivity


    As a human resources manager, you are undoubtedly aware that there are many things that can affect your employees' productivity and efficiency throughout the day. In particular, debt stress can make it very difficult for an employee to concentrate on anything, whether it be work or their personal life.

    Employees May Not Be Able to Concentrate
    When you're wondering whether or not a check is going to clear your bank account, it simply makes sense that you won't be able to concentrate on your job. And the last thing you want is an employee who is concentrating on finding debt solutions during the working hours rather than actually working on their tasks. Debt can pervade every aspect of even a very good employee's life.

    Stressed Employees Are Frustrated Employees
    It really doesn't matter what your employees are stressed about—any element of stress is likely to throw them off emotionally. A stressed employee may be more prone to frustration and less rigorous about their standards, simply because there are other things that are preying on their mind. An employee with debt as their major priority may not be able to prioritize their work.

    Employees May Not Show Up At All

    What happens when an employee in debt has car troubles? The employee is likely to have to stay home from work, because they have neither the money for a cab nor to fix their car. Employees that are deeply in debt struggle with absences and tardiness, and this can become a real problem for employers.

    Debt May Encourage Job Hunting and Moonlighting

    Most companies don't have a policy against moonlighting, but if your employees are working two jobs to get out of debt, they're probably both distracted and exhausted. Employees who are in debt may also start job hunting (sometimes even during working hours!) so that they can find a job that pays more. Either way, the bottom line is that your employee won't be concentrating on doing the best job they can for you -- they'll be concentrating either on their other jobs or on finding a new opportunity.
