Natural disasters like flooding can be expensive to deal with and lack of preparation can be catastrophic for a homeowner.  Being prepared can solidify one’s home and make restoration an easier task after a flood. Some areas are more prone to flooding than others, these are known as floodplains.They are usually lower than surround areas and significantly raise the price of insurance. If your home is in a floodplain make sure it is build to counteract the location and possibility of flooding.

If there is a chance a flood could happen, go to the store.Purchase a first aid kit, radio, flashlights and batteries in case the power goes out.Stock up on food, water and medication for a few days. Copy any important documents, such as deeds and insurance policies. It is best to keep them in a safe deposit box at a safe location.

Be aware of warning signs by keeping up to date with radio and news broadcasts. Get to higher elevation if a flood warning is issued. Avoid walking or driving near water; even shallow water can sweep you away.

Once floodwaters have receded, your home can still be dangerous. Stay away from the area until officials declare it safe. Properly dispose of any batteries, cleaning materials and fuel containers that have been exposed to flooding. Contact your health department to make sure your water supply is safe.
