    Fine Shows Risks of not Taking HIPAA Seriously

    A county government’s public health department recently agreed to a $215,000 settlement with the Department of HHS after an investigation revealed a series of HIPAA privacy and security violations.

    As a result, Skagit County, WA, is now under a three-year corrective action plan to settle potential violations of the privacy and security rules under HIPAA. This marks the first settlement HHS has made with a county government and ended an investigation that took more than two years to resolve.
