Move Your Way Toward a Healthy 2014
It¬タルs THAT time of year again. The time when you decide that you're throwing all of your unhealthy habits out the window and you resolve to start working on losing those last 15 pounds starting the first of the New Year. Yup, here come the crazy resolutions. For most of us, this means "swearing" we will get back into the gym, lose weight, run that half marathon, or stop smoking or drinking.
And for most of us, we will last about a week before we go back to old habits. Our clichᅢᄅ resolutions almost always fail. And many of us even keep resolving to make the same change for 10 years. That's right. The average person will waste an entire DECADE trying to make a change (and never actually make that change). So, we're here to help. Instead of making your usual resolution, hop on board and try ours. We're confident that we will lead you toward a healthy lifestyle that will last all year long!
Make a Lifestyle Change
Instead of trying to lose weight, spend less time online, or try a new diet, we encourage you to make a simple lifestyle change that will last for many years to come (instead of a mere month). MOVE MORE! That¬タルs right, all you have to do is move a little more throughout your day. With all of the risks of inactivity being uncovered over the last few years, deciding to move more could be the best resolution you ever make. And not only will you feel better about yourself, but you will also work to becoming a healthier you without even realizing it. Adding frequent movement throughout your day has been found to:
Boost your metabolism
Add years to your life
Reduce your risk of painful injuries and chronic diseases
Boost your energy and productivity levels
Strengthen your muscles
Help you maintain (and even lose) weight
And even better news, all it takes is about 2-3 minutes of movement every hour to get these health benefits. So that means all you need to do is make the resolution to move once every hour. That¬タルs it! Since movement can be easily integrated into your daily routine, resolving to move more will prove to be easier and more doable than many typical health and weight resolutions.
Ways You Can Move More
There are many ways for you to get moving once an hour. If you work in an office, you can always take a lap around the building (or inside if weather or location doesn't permit) to get your body going. If you are in school, stand up for a few minutes just to stretch in between Internet surfing or report writing. Some other ways you can move are by:
Getting outside for some fresh air
Giving yourself a digital detox and doing something active
Stand up and stretch during phone calls or television watching
Do office stretches when at work (some fun exercises and stretches can be found in our previous blog posts: "September is National Yoga Month" and " 'Get Vertical' for National Chiropractic Health Month")
Give Voom a try! We help by getting you moving every hour for two minutes with our fun stretching, strengthening, and fitness micro-breaks
How To Succeed with Your Resolution
The toughest part of New Year¬タルs resolutions is keeping them up. Most people will only be successful for about a month and then they are back to their usual habits. To prevent this from happening to you, follow these helpful tips to try and keep your resolution lasting a lifetime!
Be consistent. You may think that repeating a resolution every year is a sign of failure, but it¬タルs not. Continuing to make the same resolution will only ensure that you stay committed to your healthy new habit.
Under-promise, over-deliver. Making attainable, short-term goals will make it easier for you to succeed than making a harder, long-term resolution. For example, if your resolution is to lose 30 pounds, break it up into losing at least one pound every two weeks or 10 pounds every three months. Shorter goals lead to long-term results.
Give yourself ¬タワme time.¬タン Allow yourself to have extra time to relax, have more fun, and reduce stress this year. Studies have shown that Americans work more than ever with little to no downtime. Schedule in an appointment just for you¬タヤyou¬タルll be happy you did!
Allow yourself a do-over. It's hard to keep a resolution, especially long-term ones. If you see yourself gaining back the weight you lost or not flossing as regularly as you wanted, instead of being harsh and critical on yourself, give yourself a do-over. Redesign your goals and make short-term goals to get to your long-term one. You may have to do this several times over the year, but at least you¬タルre doing it! Refocusing and making the necessary changes to be successful will help you reach your goal.
