The Importance of Strengthening Exercises
By now, most of us know that prolonged sitting leads to a smorgasbord of diseases, ailments, and repetitive strain and motion injuries. But did you know that people who sit at work all day are also at risk for an assortment of other musculoskeletal injuries?
When you sit all day long not using your muscles, they begin to weaken, resulting in a process known as deconditioning syndrome. It doesn¬タルt matter if you¬タルre getting the recommended amount of daily or weekly physical activity. People who sit for six, seven, eight or more hours a day are, in the most basic terms, out of shape.
What Happens to Your Body
Your muscles need oxygen to be able to function. As you move around all day, blood is pumping through your muscles, giving them the oxygen they need for energy and acting as fuel to your body. However, when you sit for longer than 45 minutes, your blood becomes deoxygenated and does not flow into the muscles as easily. The body begins to eat at its energy reserves, the mitochondria in your cells, just to function normally.
Without movement, you are depriving the body of what it needs to stay strong, so in turn, it becomes weaker. The result is often stiff or weak muscles that are not able to support the body as well, and we see a lot of injuries as a result. Also, not only are you more likely to get injured when doing a simple activity such as gardening, or bending over to pick something up, but it will take you longer to heal.
The Solution?
Frequent movement through targeted strengthening exercises is the key to preventing this common musculoskeletal disorder from happening to you. But not sure exactly what moves you should be doing throughout the day in order to get your blood pumping after sitting for an hour?
