Build it and they will come - really? That is what Covered California is betting on. But will the uninsured really sign up? Enroll in coverage, that even with subsidies, might cost $2,000+ per year not including out of pocket expenses to have health insurance. California needs 5 million people enrolled in this program by 2015 or Federal subsidies start to disappear. Whose going to enroll? The healthy, young people that don't value insurance because they are not sick? The people that are sick and need care but right now can't find coverage? Those of us that just have a few extra bucks laying around and have nothing better to spend it on? Hmmm. Let me give this a lot of thought...
Since we realize that the people that are going to enroll are the ones that need the most care first, there is a great concern that the financial system to support this will collapse. So, then where do we go? And on top of everything else, the new law does not really do anything to address the real drivers of the cost of healthcare. When are we going to get to that??
With the UK and Canada moving to private payor insurance now with business as the trend, I find it sort of ironic that the US is seeing single payor - the National Health Care System - (send out the bald eagle now) as the panacea?? What we need to do is get real about the levels of coverage that we need and teach people how to be consumers of healthcare. I know, CRAZY. When do you question your doctor? That's supposed to be sacred! Nope - not buying it any longer. If we don't start PARTICIPATING in our healthcare decisions along with the cost implications with our employees, provider networks, hospitals and carrier partners, then we will all be waiting 12 months for a hip replacement! We can be part of the solution without Washington screwing it up for the rest of us - oh but if they pass anything Congress won't have to participate.....
