SENATE PASSES COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM BILL
On June 27, 2013, the Senate passed the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act (S. 744) by a vote of 68 to 32 with bipartisan support. This marks the first time since 2006 that a comprehensive immigration reform bill passed the Senate. The bill contains provisions calling for an increase in border security, more H-1B work visas, a new work visa category for lower skilled workers, a reduction in the permanent residence backlog, and many more changes to reform the current legal immigration system. A summary of the bill provides more information.
The bill now goes to the House of Representatives, where further amendments and negotiations are expected. If the bill passes the House, it will go before President Obama to be signed into law.
