Talent Neuron’s research indicates that companies are adopting innovative online platforms to hire skilled talent. Talent Neuron has identified three major initiatives undertaken by the companies to tap in the top tech talent from the job market.
Startups like Dropbox, Quora, and Visual.ly are leveraging ‘Developer Auction’, an online platform, to hire high-end talent. It is a platform on which developers can put themselves for auction, and startups can submit bids for the talent. The platform accepts applications from developers with notable GitHub profiles, candidates with computer science degrees from leading US universities, and current employees of companies like Google, Facebook and others. It is estimated that each developer receives at least 5 to 15 offers in a bid cycle which goes on for two weeks. Once the bids are accepted by developers, interview process is initiated. Talent Neuron estimates that about 200+ startups are leveraging ‘developer auction’ as a hiring medium. With the increased interest from students to work in startups, ‘developer auction’ is now planning to expand its auction to include internship offers for students. However, at present, the auction is open only for startups and developers in Bay Area, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Boston, Boulder, Chicago and Washington.

Talent Neuron estimates that there are about 1.5 million registered freelancers skilled in the software domain. In 2012, the job skills such as Shell Scripting, PeopleSoft, and SAS witnessed a growth in demand on these freelancing platforms. Trilogy, Austin based Software Services Company, strongly believes in flexible workforce model and extensively works with developers on ODesk. 80 percent of the company’s workforce comprises freelancers. Talent Neuron research indicates that top companies such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft are also leveraging this platform.
Crowdsourcing is another approach adopted by companies to engage with skilled work force. Companies like P&G, GE, and EMC post challenges on Innocentive.com, a leading crowdsourcing platform. The platform has over 300,000 registered solvers who can pick up the challenges and post solutions. They are in turn rewarded with cash prize, and if the solution is unique it is patented too.
