The Pros & Cons of Career Transformation
    Christine Glasco
     * You establish an aggressive development plan or set your sights on a never before achieved career breakthrough.
    * Maybe you decide on participating in an accelerated advanced degree or a coveted certificate program relevant to your field.
    * Possibly you have taken steps to move to a non-traditional field or an organization that meets your strict triple bottom line (3BL) criteria.
    * After much consideration you want to leave the corporate rat race and become an entrepreneur.
    * You choose to transition into a ‘Portfolio’ career: an intricately designed collection of roles that allows for flexibility and taps into your passions.

Q: Why won’t friends, family, co-workers, bosses, accept that you need to change and/or allow you to change?

A: The status quo makes sense for them and in lots of ways – reinforces their view of the world. The status quo is perceived by significant others as: known, predictable and safe. The changes you are contemplating have far-reaching reverberations that may impact the family, friendships, your socioeconomic standing or your current work situation.

I write a lot on the topics of re-branding, reinvention, renewing, transformation, career transition. I haven’t written on the forces that might impede transformation.

If you are considering the pros and cons of making major career changes or a executing a complete transformation, here are some positive and opposing issues (forces) that you might consider.

Whatever you decide – to go forward with your career transformation or not – understand that you are moving through unchartered waters. Seek the counsel of others who have made a similar journey or be on the lookout for a savvy career coach. I might just know a coach that would fit the bill!
