President Jammeh of the Republic of Gambia has declared a four-day workweek for the African nation.
Government workers will now work from Monday to Thursday, 8-6 pm. That's still a 40-hour workweek but with Fridays off.
The president declared that the extra day of rest is to allow Gambians to devote more time to prayers, agriculture, and social activities.
Here in the West, the 9-5 five-day workweek is still seen as the norm. In 2008, the state of Utah tried the four-day workweek experiment, working four 10-hour days as a way to cut costs. But the experiment didn't last. Other US states also considered this new work arrangement.
The four-day workweek is popular in some European countries. I believe it's a wonderful concept. Who doesn't want a long weekend every week? You get to recharge, spend more time with family, and live more sustainably with more time to cook, and less commuting. At the end of the day, it's all about flexibility.
An employment trends survey in 2011 revealed that the majority of respondents offered at least one form of flexible work arrangement.
