There is so much to love about PRACTICE PERFECT: 42 RULES FOR GETTING BETTER AT GETTING BETTER by Doug Lemov, Erica Woolway, and Katie Yezzi.
For many years, in my seminars, I have taught people: “HOW” you do something is every bit as important as what you do, sometimes more important. How do you get better at anything? Practice, right? But not if you practice doing it wrong! So often people want to figure it —whatever it is—- out on their own, until they find a way to do “it” that “feels right.” The problem is that if you practice doing something wrong what you get good at is doing it wrong! You practice bad habits. And habits feel good, whether they are good habits or bad habits.
One of the things I LOVE about this great book is that they focus first on rethinking so many faulty assumptions about practice:
“Assumption: Practice makes perfect.” What’s the reality? “Practice can be unproductive or even counterproductive unless you practice doing it right.”
