Rothin Bhattacharyya is CEO, HCL security & EVPMarketing, Strategy & Business Development, HCL infosystems. In this 'View from the Top' Leadership interview with KellyOCG, he talks on what his recipe for success was and what qualities he felt were most important to it. Here is a brief snapshot of the interview:
What is the secret behind your success?
Integrity and hard work.
In your view, what are some of the qualities the company identified in you?
My ability to upscale the existing operations and make them global.
Would these be the same qualities you look for in your future leaders?
Very much so. The leader taking over from me must be good at transforming the overall operations and business strategies to desired long-term objectives and goals. He should be good at dealing with legacy and executing plans.
How have things changed since you took the helm?
There have been drastic changes due to the transformation exercise since I took over the role. The first and most obvious change is people’s mindset in achieving the impossible.
In times of crisis, how do you manage the company out of it?
At times things do not go as planned and keeping the team focused on a shared vision is the ultimate tool.
What has been the most exciting aspect of this role? Any surprises you uncovered after assuming the role?
Dealing with legacy built over a long period of time. It has been a great personal learning to be an architect of such transformational thoughts and actions.
Are you concerned about the repercussions from trying to bring about change to a company with a long history and a certain way of doing things?
I'm not concerned about bringing the change, however, I'm conscious of the fact that it has its own gestation time.
What do you do to inspire your staff to stay motivated and committed to the strategic direction the company is taking?
In simple words, three things: keeping them focused with a shared vision; putting actions to personal stake and having defined mile stone checks.
