Many grads will start their first job this summer. If this is your first job, you may have the first-job jitters. Perhaps you don’t know what to expect, or maybe you think you are not good enough for the job. Whatever your reasons, here are three tips on how to cope.
1. Rest. Get plenty of sleep and have a hearty breakfast. These two simple steps can make you feel more confident and relaxed on your first day.
2. Remember that the company hired you for a reason. If they did not feel you were competent they would not have hired you. Reminding yourself of this will also boost your confidence.
3. Manage your expectations. Your first day will likely be spent on introductions, orientation, and explanations of your job role. Your plate will be full, so don’t place too much emphasis on impressing everyone in your first 8 hours there.
