    How to make a diffrence when dealing with Domestic Abuse


    I was reading an interesting article in regards to domestic abuse called “Out of the Shadows” by Dori Meinert and how 1 in10 employees are currently being abused. As an HR specialist it is our responsibility to make sure every employee feels safe at the work place and to provide service to assist them as well.

    In order to recognize these issues we have to first know the warning signs of abuse.  Without knowing these signs we cannot assist our fellow co-workers. Some of the warning signs of abuse are as follows: wearing long sleeves all the time in the summer. Acts distracted and jump when the phone rings. These can be some sign of domestic abuse (Meinert).
     
    In order to get to the underline problem we will need to focus on their performance at work and then ask if there is anything else that is current affecting their performance. According to the article 64% of the abuse victims suffer from low productivity at work.

    As a HR specialist we have to approach this matter very cautiously. We are not specialist in domestic violence; however, as professionals we have the ability to direct these employees in the right direction to receive help and assistance. It is our responsibility to get out of the office and walk around and get to know the employees. We can make a difference if we just take that extra step.
