I find it amazing how some Managers always want to be the good person not the bad person. I have seen the difference when a stern Manager rules their team compare to a fun and joking Manager.
I have seen productivity increase as well as moral due to being an enforcer compare to playing the good person. Yes, I know at times we need to like the Manager in charged; however, just because a member of management is stern does not mean he or she is not nice or fun to be with.
Yes I know some managers do not have strong disciplinary skills and usually they are the ones some employees prefer to be on their team. Because they know, they could get away with things compare to having a stern Manager. As part of HR professionals, it is important we understand both management styles and make sure rules are implemented for both teams.
