Canada's unemployment rate is at its lowest since January 2009, a few months after the recession, at 74 percent, resulting from more jobs and fewer people applying for jobs. Approximately 27,500 fewer Canadians are looking for work and are creating their own jobs instead, as traditional work becomes harder and harder to get.

According to Statistics Canada, 22,300 jobs were created in May, down from April's 58,000 job gain. The manufacturing sector took the hardest hit in the goods-producing sector, with 22,500 fewer jobs. The public sector shed 44,300 jobs as Canada's economy becomes slower.

Economists had predicted that May would be a slow month for job creation, especially with May's rainy days - an omen that pointed to a soggy report. Most of the employment gains in May were in the retail and wholesale trade industries, culture and recreation, and information.
