Enterprise 2.0 conference….
Reporting from the floor of the Enterprise 2.0 conference in Boston. Well you think the HR space has it fragmentation and TLA (Three letter acronyms) so does social media players. On the floor everyone is saying it’s the enterprise Social media platform… Please www.
yammer.com .. You’re a corporate IM tool not the social media platform. I was surprised by the big guys here like
IBM, Booz Allen, Hamilton INFOSYS, Convergys all selling consulting services around the concept of social media. Cisco is here promoting their WebEx platform and other products, IBM with SharePoint … you get the drift. Apparently every instance of SharePoint requires 9 dollars of consulting services to make it work…. That before you even put in a piece of content.
Vendors like Double-dutch are developing on boarding apps without understanding the HR concept of on boarding. No regard to provisioning, tax credits, Hr forms, Payroll… just the ability to see what employees are doing in their daily life.
Not too many HR people roaming the floor … Mostly IT types or Community building type of people. The most interesting conversation was from a gentleman from Avery Dennison the label people. He was looking for social media apps around “RFID labels” for an application in retail. Putting RFID tags in clothes so when you picked up an item of clothing you could see a model walk down an aisle with it, some one accessorize it, and ultimately providing more information on the item. It also enables store to do quicker more accurate inventory, and reduces theft ( knowing where the stolen item is ) and many more traditional cost savings. I asked him what has that got to do with social media … his response is would you like to show you friends and husband what you are going to buy and ask their opinion on it in advance…. My answer was no, but maybe some of you indecisive shoppers who need affirmation from your peeps would like this app.
So the observation I have like many others is that the larger more complex document management intranet firms are all struggle with this social media phonemoum. Struggling to integrate, struggling with the business model, struggle with the ability to keep current and in their wake lies 100 different social media platforms all trying to eat their lunch for a fraction of their price.
Anyway onto day 2… more confusion…
