    Interviewing Candidates via Video


    You’re sitting in your office cruising for top talent online, but the problem is, sometimes the best candidates are located far across the ocean. You’re not about to fly them in for an interview, so what do you do? Enter - the Video Interview.

    Video, overall, is hot, as seen by sites like YouTube and Vimeo. But when it comes to recruiting, video is becoming a hot tool to meet and interview candidates. It’s almost as good as having the candidate sitting across from your desk. You can see how they dress, and their general body language. You can also do things, like introducing the candidate to the rest of your staff on the line.

    Now the question is, which video conferencing tool is best for you? Of course, Skype is popular and free, but it does have its limitations. For example, one manager on Skype was interviewing a candidate and wanted to introduce her to his 25 employees, but Skype has a 10-person limit.

    Here are some video conferencing options for you to explore.

    1.VuCall, based in the UK, has HD video conferencing for up to 100 people. It automatically switches the view to the person speaking, as well. It encrypts video calls, and records video sessions to be streamed later to others. Cost: $40-50 per head.

    2. HireVue, based in Utah, allows you to record video interviews. But the added bonus is that you can skip through recorded sessions. For example, if a candidate is clearly not a good fit you can skip to the next recorded interview. HireVue also allows you to pull up recorded answers from different applicants allowing you to compare how each of them answered a particular question. You can also click on the candidate’s LinkedIn profile that’s attached to the interview file. Cost: $25-175 per interview.

    3. Interview Stream. This allows job candidates to record their video responses to questions at their own convenience, which is great if candidates are in different time zones. It also offers a “practice interview” feature that allows applicants to see how they would look and sound in an interview. Cost: $50 per interview.

    4. Imo.im, based in California, is a free video chat service that allows you to sign in using your social network profiles. It allows you to video chat with other groups of people who may be using different platforms. This tool is great in the technical field, where you can ask a candidate to solve a programming problem. You then open a pull-out window within the program, and by using a site such as Typwith.me you can see how the candidate works out the problem.

    At the end of the day, though, there is nothing like an in-person interview.
