How would you like to be able to take your work to the lake, the café, or to the park sometimes instead of having to work in the office? I don’t have a decent lake in my area, but I do enjoy working from home, and as it happens many others share my sentiment.
A recent survey from Cisco, an IT company, shows that three out of five employees around the world have a desire to be mobile and flexible, so much so that they would rather take a job that is lower paying but flexible, than one that is higher paying but inflexible. The study was conducted in 13 countries, with Spain, China, Brazil, and India, showing the highest sentiments of not needing to be in the office to be productive.
Of those employees who can access the corporate network outside of the office, about 45% admitted that they work a couple of extra hours each day, and some even four extra hours, but that doesn’t mean that they are on-demand, 24/7 employees.
Despite all of this, some employers are not prepared to accommodate IT employees working remotely, saying that the company is not prepared technology-wise to support a mobile workforce.
How about you? Do you support telecommuting or having a remote, mobile workforce? Do you believe that if employees can be productive anytime and anywhere that it would increase employee satisfaction and productivity? Do you foresee any problems with working away from the office?
