VoIP competition is catching up to Skype
    Resource Nation Nation
Since it was released in 2003, Skype has had a hold on the Video chat and VoIP conferencing market. However, as Internet speeds have become faster and more reliable, new competitors have popped up to challenge Skype’s control. There are several newer programs that offer the same services as Skype as well as a few new ones.

∗MegaMeeting: the most business-ready of all VoIP options. MegaMeeting supports video conferencing for up to 16 participants, with an unlimited amount of users allowed to “sit in” on the virtual conference. It also supports live application and screen sharing, as well as PowerPoint presentation capabilities. Can be downloaded online or purchased for $30 to ensure encrypted security.

∗iChat: Apple’s VoIP program, it comes standard on all Macbooks and most newer models of computers made by Apple. It has all the same features as Skype and MegaMeeting, but it is far more streamlined and easier for first time users to pick it up.

Doesn’t require all the advanced hardware that is needed for Skype, like dual-core processors and special Logitech webcams. iChat is installed directly onto the computer, and therefore does not need and hardware or require any sort of installation.

∗Zoho Meeting: Not a downloadable program, works through a web browser. Allows for high quality 1-on-1 video conferencing. Can be combined with Skype to incorporate contacts and long distance connections. Charges for additional Users.

∗Palbee: Works through a web browser, no program to download. Allows up to five participants. Can record video chats for playback and broadcasting later. Also offers a virtual whiteboard that all the users can share and “write” on.
