    Before Cutting Benefits, Consider the Alternatives, Happy and Healthy Employees Are More Productive

    Rising health care costs are a concern for everyone. And as costs increase, so do insurance premiums. High premiums, coupled with uncertain economic times, are causing some employers to consider eliminating employee benefits. Businesses generally consider health care insurance essential to employee recruitment and retention. So where do they turn in their cost-cutting efforts? Ancillary benefits such as dental insurance. Eliminating dental insurance may save money in the short-term, but it can have long-term financial and health consequences.

    Without some type of benefits, employees think twice before visiting a health care professional for check-ups or at the first sign of a problem. Many people don’t realize that good oral health relates to overall health. In fact, routine dental check-ups can detect the signs and symptoms of serious medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney failure, the onset of a stroke or complications with pregnancy. Americans who lack dental insurance are 67 percent more likely to develop heart disease and 29 percent more likely to develop diabetes.

    Eliminating dental coverage could not only result in increased health insurance premiums in the future, it could dramatically affect productivity and absenteeism with employees. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “Employed adults lose more than 164 million hours of work each year due to dental disease or dental visits.”
