We all know about the power of social media, and that some employers check up on employees, or investigate potential employees on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, to name a few. Now Workers' Compensation claims investigators have gotten in on the act. and have been catching bogus insurance claimants red-handed.
For instance, some claimants who are supposedly disabled post the dates and locations of their upcoming band performances and even post photos of their activity. Some even brag how they have tricked their employer. One claimant, who supposedly could not get out of bed, was seen riding a bucking bronco in a video.
Of course, bogus insurance claimants being caught on video surveillance is nothing new, but now social media is the new video camera - except that the claimants are doing the filming. Investigators find that using social networking sites to tail claimants has reduced costs as it eliminates the time spent waiting for claimants to behave in a way that contradicts their claims. What they can't find offline, such as addresses or photos, they can find on these sites.
Most of the evidence collected is used to reject claims rather than for fraud prosecution, but not always.
