Do you advocate checking on candidates online before hiring them? According to Reid Hoffman, LindedIn's founder, job applicants are more honest on their LinkedIn profiles than on the resumes they send in to employers. His reasoning: resumes are read by a few people in any company who know nothing about the candidate, whereas a candidate may have hundreds of connections on LinkedIn and may have worked with all of those connections. Therefore, the candidate would not really lie in front of current or former colleagues.
LinkedIn is no replacement for a resume, however. But some experts still advise checking a candidate's profile to make sure there are no discrepancies in the information that you receive.
