Recruitment key priority for new Rotary president

With all the club's projects set for the next few years, the new Portage la Prairie Rotary Club president says he wants to concentrate on bringing in new members and getting the club's name out there in the community.
"My main focus for the club is really going to be around raising our profile in the future in Portage la Prairie," said Guy Moffat, who took over as Rotary president July 1.
In the past, Moffat pointed out, typical Rotary members were presidents or managers or owners of businesses and companies, but he aims to entice the people who work in those companies to join as well.

Sector Snap: Staffing companies rise

HARTFORD, Conn. -Shares of several staffing companies climbed with the broader market Wednesday, but an analyst cautioned that investors may be acting on premature hopes that unemployment may be leveling off.
The market was up about 3 percent in afternoon trading after Intel Corp. issued strong quarterly results and an upbeat forecast, suggesting the economy may have begun a recovery. In the staffing sector, Shares of Robert Half International Inc. rose $1.10, or 5.2 percent, to $22.46. Manpower Inc. rose $1.75, or 4.4 percent, to $41.68 and Kelly Services Inc. rose 88 cents, or 8.2 percent, to $11.67

SEC stripped of staff before crisis
Regulator still under-funded, chairman says

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) was slowly stripped of its staff in the years leading up to the financial crisis due to budget cuts.
As a result, the US market regulator did not have enough resources to do its work properly, SEC chairman Mary Schapiro said at the International Corporate Governance Network (ICGN) conference in Sydney yesterday.
"It is true that the SEC has historically been significantly under-funded," Schapiro said in a pre-recorded video message to delegates.
