Research out of York University conducted earlier this year examining the impact of manager and team absence behaviour on employee absence behaviour has produced interesting preliminary findings. Results suggest that manager absence is a driver of team absence behaviour and individual absence behaviour. Additionally, organizational climate is correlated with absence behavior, with better climate leading to reduced team absence behaviour. The results suggest that absence is a learned behaviour, and that the nature of the relationship between an employee and their manager and team impact the extent of the alignment of absenteeism.
While these preliminary results are interesting, we are looking to replicate this study in other organizations.
