    The Online Video Revolution and HR

    I returned recently from the Newspaper Association of America's (NAA) MediaXChange conference in Las Vegas. My company, voped, was there to demonstrate our video platform technology to publishers looking to catalogue and monetize their video content. It was a worthwhile conference for us since the video revolution continues to be critical to the survival of the newspaper industry.

    On the way back home from the NAA conference I met an interesting woman on the plane. She’s a brand manager for a major hotel chain, and we had a great conversation about everything from work to family to the economy. It was clear that she loved her job, loved working with people and had great enthusiasm for her company and the people in it. Being on the management team of a video technology company I naturally asked her about how she communicates out to the 160 locations that she manages for the brand. She excitedly recounted to me the video that she produced for their housekeeping teams. It sounded like a great video and is a critical piece of her toolkit in reaching their overall performance goals. When I asked how they distributed it I wasn’t surprised to hear that they sent the DVD out through the mail to all of their locations. I was quite pleased to be able to share with her how much easier, more effective, and more cost effective that part of her communications strategy could be.

    While we primarily market our video platform to media companies, like the ones we met at the NAA, there’s a great opportunity for HR managers to enhance their communications and save money on the distribution of video messages whether they are for training, for motivation, for information or organizational updates. Video platforms are easy for anyone to embed on a website to catalogue video content, whether its proprietary or from another source. And there are lots of customization options including allowing users to upload videos for review and publication.

    For my friend on the plane I explained that distributing her videos could be as easy as sending an email, and would give her a platform to build on her video communications in a well organized way. And with everyone looking to cut costs right now, a video platform would save money for organizations sending multiple videos out to multiple sites. Not to mention, for those companies that are green or are looking to go green, it definitely helps meet those goals.

    It is often said these days that now is the time when some of the best innovations emerge. As video technologies continue to revolutionize communications, look for ways to apply those technologies in the most effective way possible. There are endless possibilities and the next exciting feature or tool, that will make your organization better and more effective at communications, is right around the corner – or on the next plane.
