1) It reduces the risk of diabetes.
Harvard researchers discovered, after analyzing data on 126,000 people for as long as 18 years, that having one to three cups of caffeinated coffee daily can reduce the risk of diabetes by single digits. However, having six cups or more each day decreased men's risk by 54% and women's by 30%.
2) It reduces the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.
Research shows that people who drink coffee on a regular basis are up to 80% less likely to develop Parkinson's. Three studies indicated that the more you drink coffee, the lower your risk.
3) It offsets damage cause by other vices.
Some research indicates that coffee can offsets some of the damage caused by other vices. "People who smoke and are heavy drinkers have less heart disease and liver damage when they regularly consume large amounts of coffee compared to those who don't," says Tomas DePaulis, a PhD, research scientist at Vanderbilt University's Institute for Coffee Studies.
4) It helps manage asthma.
There is data that coffee may help manage asthma and even help control asthmatic attacks when medication is not available.
5) It stops headaches, boosts mood, and even prevents cavities.
6) Coffee beans contain a great deal of antioxidants.
There are a great deal of antioxidants in coffee beans, some of which are especially potent during the roasting process. Coffee has more than four times the amount of antioxidants than one cup of green tea. Antioxidants are chemical compounds that fight free radicals, which, if allowed to grow, will attack our body and cause disease, most commonly cancer. Last year, a study from the University of Scranton showed that Americans' number one source for antioxidants is coffee. That goes for caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee.
7) It boosts athleticism.
According to Terry Graham, PhD, of the University of Guelph in Canada, a physiologist and long-time coffee researcher, caffeine is a powerful aid in enhancing athletic endurance and performance. I is so powerful that until recently, caffeine was deemed a "controlled" substance by the Olympic Games Committee. This means that it could be consumed only in small, designated amounts by competing athletes.
8) Drinking four or more cups of coffee a day may help prevent gout.
Recent researched at the University of British Columbia revealed that coffee (including decaffeinated) drinking (4 or more cups a day) is more likely to have a much lower uric acid level in the blood. When the kidneys do not get rid of enough of the uric acid, it can later crystallize out of the blood into the joints, the result is gout. By lowering the uric acid level in the blood, coffee helps to prevent gout.
9) Coffee may protect against bladder cancer.
10) Coffee can reduce the risk of chronic liver disease.
The liver’s task is to be the filter of toxins and the other detritus that accumulate from drinking and eating. Cirrhosis of the liver is most frequently caused by excessive alcohol drinking, but some cases do develop among non-drinkers. Recent studies have indicated that it is not the caffeine that helps prevent cirrhosis but the combination of other compounds in coffee. Two recent studies by Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program cohorts revealed that subjects who drank four or more cups of coffee per day had upwards of 80 percent less chance of developing liver cirrhosis than non-coffee drinkers. In another study, death from the disease was reduced 23 percent. (Cirrhosis caused by Hepatitis C appears to be unaffected by coffee consumption.) Another study in Norway, showed that cancer of the liver can be reduced by drinking coffee.
11) Coffee jump-starts short-term memory.
One of coffee's main compounds, caffeine, does not have specific nutritional value, yet it demonstrates medicinal properties. It is helpful in keeping the mind alert and the body action-ready. Recent studies showed that the therapeutic value of coffee and caffeine protects against the onset of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Scientists now believe that caffeine stimulates the brain cells to stimulate choline, which helps in making "neurotransmitters." Caffeine is a phytochemical (a plant-derivative chemical) and phytochemicals are known for their therapeutic and medical properties.
12) Coffee is known to discourage the development of colon cancer.
Research shows that at least two cups daily can translate to a 25% reduced risk of colon cancer.
13) It protects against gallstones.
According to research done at the Harvard School of Public Health, the results showed that caffeinated coffee appears to help reduce the symptoms of gallstones. Men have a four percent lower risk of developing gallstones when they drink two or three cups of caffeinated coffee per day. Furthermore, men who drink four or more cups reduce the risk up to 45 percent. Another study carried out by the Harvard Nurses’ Health Study followed 80,000 women for 20 years. Its results showed that coffee reduces the risk of gallstones among women by 25 percent when they drink four or more cups a day. Researchers believe that caffeine in coffee helps lower cholesterol concentrations in the bile although caffeinated tea and soda do not have the same effect.
14) It contributes to your daily fibre intake.
Eight ounces of coffee has about 1.5 grams of fibre. Most people could use a lot more fibre in their diet, and a few cups of coffee can bring a lot of relief.
15) It reduces muscle pain.
According to the March 2007 issue of the Journal of Pain, drinking two cups of coffee can cut post-workout muscle pain by up to 48%.
