    Workplace Diversity

    In the past decade, the workforce has changed dramatically. More than ever, a workplace is a diverse collection of individuals proud of all the components that make them unique.

    The challenge becomes inspiring diverse individuals work as a team. We all know what happens to organizations that don’t have effective teamwork: they falter and often fail. Neglecting to embrace diversity and utilize it to achieve business outcomes can impact employee engagement and customer satisfaction. Handled poorly, it can also have serious legal costs for corporations.

      I believe this needs to be an integral part of a company's culture. It should be top-down. If a tone of dignity and respect are set by owners/management, it permeates the organization; and individuals who don't fit either self-select out or are dealt with.

      So, does diversity need to be "managed" or "monitored?" I think only monitored at an enlightened company.

      One of my focal points is finding ways to get [i]everyone[/i] meaningfully involved in dealing with the organization's business objectives. That is a critical step in respecting and valuing diversity, and helps make sure people are paying primary attention to what has to get done to make the organization successful. -- Brian
