A Happy New year to all. This entry is very Asian and is reflective of my views in the asian environment.
Its the end of the year and the dawn of a new year. Its reflection time.
I have been on the sideline for sometime now and Its very sad to hear about so many people issues and management's solution is just to remove the employee. Of course, leaving the poor HR guy to do the dirty job, whatever it takes and do not create a mess. What to do? Technically how to handle disciplinary action is clearly drawn out in the relevant acts and books available so do look it up as you will need it in the long run. As the saying goes " give a man a fish and he eat for today, teach a man to fish and he...."
Are the days gone when management appreciate the feedback from employees? Raising issues and problems to management, and showing dissatisfaction with the company benefits, working hours, etc. can be taken positively, and the actions the management takes to address and work on the issues will be a motivating factor to the employees if handled properly. I am sure everyone of us is a critic in one way or another, so why punish the guy who is more vocal.
HR practitioners are not mere executioners, enforcers of the "law". We are organizational developers and motivators. We are talent scouts, developers and talent management experts. We are counselors and guides to the right path for employees and employers. We promote the harmony and balance to match expectations with skills and attributes between employers and employees. We do need to sit down with disgruntled employees to find out source of issues and if other employees are also facing the same issues.
In short, When it comes to people, we put things right. Yes, sometimes putting things right means we have to put people out, as long as he does not fit into the picture and its a painful process. In the first place its our responsibility to ensure that we do not put people who does not fit into the picture, into the organization. so we do need to look at ourselves, to ensure that we take a part of the blame and treat the employee fairly and justly. You will never know if by some strange turn of events, you could be working for him in the future!
