Your company has just decided to outsource your background screening. Now come the thousands of options that can be confusing, starting with which firm to use. After you have selected the firm, you have to decide what services you want to do for your background screening report. There are almost as many services as there are companies that run the reports! Here are some things to consider:
Do you need the credit report? A credit report is generally recommended if your candidate is going to be working in a position of financial responsibility within your organization.
For criminal checks, what crimes are you looking for that would immediately remove a candidate from consideration for a position? How is your company going to handle it if a candidate comes back with a criminal record?
What level of education is a requirement for the position you have? Does it require the candidate hold a degree in a specific field? Is a high school diploma adequate for the position? What if your applicant has a verified high school diploma but there are inconsistances in the college degree they indicate they have? Many employers will use the education question for a “truth verifier” indicator.
Contacting a reliable screening service and speaking with them about what your needs are and what you hope to accomplish will go a long way to answering these questions. A reputable firm will always have someone available to assist you and answer any questions or concerns you may have.
