How do you effect change?
Do you like your job? Are you were you think you should be at this point in your career? What’s holding you back?
Ponder all you want but it won’t get you were you want to be. To effect change you have to take charge of your situation. Think about confronting your present situation to determine if you and your boss are on the same page. If you are that’s great if not you have a decision to make:
1) It’s time to develop yourself
2) It’s time to move on
Coaching
Maybe it’s time for a coach, somebody who can help you get where you want to go.The corporate world is now recognizing the value of coaching to develop leaders and strong team players, and many companies provide access to professional services to support their staff’s performance. My advice to this situation is to be careful. You have to consider the motivation and ethic of the coach. To whom are they loyal? What agenda will be addressed? How will you benefit?
I am aware of stories on both sides of the issue. On a positive note a coach can really help improve your skill set. But the downside is that this service supports a company agenda and unless you conform you will be viewed as a person who doesn’t respond. So make sure you are “holding hands” before you agree to a coaching benefit.
Coaches are expensive so be comfortable with the fact that you and your employer are going to get feedback. If this makes you uncomfortable then discuss alternatives with your manager.
Moving on
If its moving on time then you need to make a commitment to yourself to get it done. Like coaches transition consultants are sometimes overpriced. Why somebody would spend over $700 to get a resume prepared is beyond me. If a document can’t come from the person it represents then you set yourself up for a similar situation going forward. Maybe all that is needed is a simple to use system for developing a personalized Marketing Program for moving on.
