Often in organizational learning settings I've heard people errantly say "Our organization has the capability but not the capacity to do xyz." Let's get real. Those are synonyms. As learning experts we should utilize the following language sets, as they truly are the ones that frame our entire discussion at the executive table.

"Ability" - The power to achieve the goal

"Capability" - or capacity, refers to the potential an organization has of acquiring, maintaining or enhancing an ability

"Aptitude" - An inherent capacity for learning, whether that be talent-based or skills-based.

The Atlantis space shuttle is ready to launch again at NASA in five days. For it to even get to the launch pad there was a tremendous aptitude for space exploration - we'll call that "scope." Before lift off all of the guidance systems will be fired up so that it maintains the proper bearing into space - we'll call that "vector." Ultimately the most powerful ingredient that is needed to achieve the goal of breaking the earth's atmosphere is what we will call "thrust." Scope, vector and thrust are mission critical to achieving its goal.

Therefore, bottom line, learning executives must be about creating strategic aptitude (scope) within the organization such that capability (vector) increases and ability (thrust) is maximized.

No more need to play with words. Learning Executives have the opportunity today to become the glue in this dynamic world that both holds organizations together and provides them with a feast of aptitude, capability and ability. Its time we stepped up to the plate and claimed territory for the good of the organization and the valuable people that work within. Demonstrate business acumen and it will be rewarded.
