In The Tipping Point, author Malcolm Gladwell references sociologist Mark Granovetter´s 1974 study Getting a Job. The purpose of the reference was to highlight Granovetter´s finding that weak ties proved to be an important link for candidates looking for a job. Granovetter defines weak ties as acquaintances and goes on to suggest that because acquaintances "occupy a different world"; jobseekers would do well to expand their network of acquaintances if they want to increase their chances of finding employment. The premise being that acquaintances would know of employment opportunities not otherwise know to the job seeker.
This lesson should not be lost on the recruitment professional tasked with finding the best and brightest candidates in an increasingly competitive market. Taking the time to review - and take inventory - of their own weak ties along with those of high performing employees might help fill the talent pipeline with their next star performer.
