Recently, the US Office of Personnel Management has chosen to use Plateau Systems to enable an initiative in which Human Resource Specialists and members of the Information Technology community assess their skills and competencies, benchmarking them against job roles. A number of organizations are using competencies to add value to human capital management and development processes. In today´s blog, I have chosen to outline what I feel to be valuable competency related resources to be found on HR.com.
During last week´s presentation at FOSE, I was joined by Dr. David J. Koehn, Ph.D., Executive Director - Learning & Performance Services, CACI, NSG´s Chief Learning Officer and David Bryan Dlouhy, Senior Foreign Service Officer, from the United States Department of State. The presentation provided an overview of the benefits of competency identification, along with a discussion around how to go about using them successfully, followed by a case study presented by David Dlouhy. The entire slide deck is available on crm.hr.com under Events/Government/Educational Sessions for Thurs. March 9th, 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. - "Making the Move to Identify Competencies - What, Why, How."
A search on the HR.com website for "Making the Move to Identify Competencies - How to go about selecting a vendor" will turn up an archived webcast on this topic along with the transcript. This will provide more details about the content of my portion of the presentation.
The webcast "Building Leadership Competencies" hosted by my colleague Karen Elmhirst is also available in our archives. This webcast consists of a panel of experts discussing leadership competencies, and is not to be missed.
Two other archived webcasts which touch on the topic of competencies are: Reality HR Interview with Augie Schulke on "Using Competence Based Management Development to Align People with Strategy" and the Reality HR Interview with Human Resources/Organizational Development Panel from City Public Service Energy. These both provide practical information on how these organizations proceeded with competency identification.
We also have two related interviews coming up in the next few months. Karen Elmhirst will speak with Richard Boyatzis on March 13th and I will speak with him on April 25th on the topic of The Use of Competencies: History and Progress to Date.
