As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S., many of our thoughts will be turning to the positive elements of our lives - those people/conditions or things we feel fortunate to have in our lives.
So much of my day is spent in front of a computer and I must say, I feel thankful for the technology that enables me to access information and complete transactions quickly. Armed with a computer and Internet connection, we are able to access perspectives and information from around the world. I often think back to my college days when locating a specific government publication meant navigating the phone system (involving placing a number of calls before finding the right department), ordering the publication, mailing the cheque and waiting for it to arrive in the mail. Now, when I renew my annual license plate sticker at a kiosk conveniently placed at the local mall, I marvel at the difference in the process that used to involve long waits in overflowing offices.
Navigating the sea of information has become a skill all on its own. Access to information is great, but we must be able to access the right information we require when we require it most. Companies such as Google, which provide us with tools to navigate this sea of information, are experiencing great success. In order to replicate the kind of efficiency that comes to mind when using the kiosk at the mall, we need to know where we can find accurate information that is of relevance to our work and lives but can also how to find it in as few mouse clicks as possible. In addition to knowing where to access necessary info, we need to know "who" can help us find the answers we require that may not otherwise be uncovered so easily. These people make up our formal and informal network; individuals we have relationships with or referrals to, who can provide us with the necessary advice to enable us to access the right info as quickly as possible. I am also thankful for those individuals in my network.
At HR.com, our goal is to connect members with the knowledge and resources needed to effectively manage the people side of business. Our Corporate Memberships and Executive Councils were launched in order to facilitate exactly this type of information sharing - providing the place to get concentrated information related to the issues you care about while also providing the framework for a network of individuals who can help you find the answers that otherwise may not be so easily uncovered.
May you all have a safe and happy Thanksgiving and remember to extend a warm thank- you to all those who generously share their knowledge and contribute towards your learning.
