In the November 14th issue of Forbes magazine Quentin Hardy´s article brings to light a few of the mantras that have served Google well. It might be considered an understatement, but Google does seem to be doing well at the moment, so following their lead may not be such a bad idea for your career. Here are three ideas that are mentioned in the article that would easily make sense for the staffing vertical as well.
-the true God is data- According to Google´s Marissa Mayer, Director of Consumer Products "often differences of opinion between smart people are differences of data." She also states that in some meetings people aren´t allowed to say "I think..." but instead must say "the data suggests..."
Another interesting concept noted is that Data Velocity = Invention.
-the crowd always outsmarts anyone inside it- the bottom line is that a culture that shares information and encourages debate thrives. Google employees start their week posting on the internal Google website what they did the week before for all employees to see. Google also has an "ideas mailing list"
-take your time in the hiring process - getting the wrong person on the bus is detrimental to effectiveness/output. According to Alan Eustace, Google´s engineering chief, "it doesn´t take much for a single person to subtract 10% from everyone else."
