In "Education 2.0" (Latin Trade, May 2000) Andrea Mandel-Campbell details ITESM´s (Monterrey Institute of Technology) efforts to maintain its status as the "M.I.T. of Latin America." In 1997 it implemented a plan to completely computerize the institution (85,000 students at 30 campuses), which now includes a campus internet system; another network which students can access from home; a wireless program allowing limitless web access; and an internet portal, complete with weather, news, and an online banking option soon to come. Most importantly, all of this state-of-the-art technology has revolutionized teaching. With the almost unlimited access to information through computers, students can learn on their own. Professors no longer have to spend their classroom time passing on information. In the words of one, "The professor is no longer a transmitter of information, but a facilitator, an administrator of information." With this ITESM hopes to keep its competitive edge and ensure that its students continue to obtain employment within a month of graduation. At Spanusa we see a strong and growing interest with ITESM graduates among hiring managers of global corporations.
