In "Going Beyond Recruitment" (Advertising Age, February 2000) Mr. Wally Snyder, President/CEO of the American Advertising Federation, remarks that the ad industry requires multicultural leadership in addition to a multicultural workforce. Multinational corporations learned some time ago that local country managers are critical for success, and that this same principal applies to working with ethnic communities here at home. Moreover, a company''s efforts to attract minority trainees are facilitated by the presence of ethnic managers, who prove that advancement is possible. Mr. Snyder argues that this is especially important in industries which offer lower starting salaries than others, and which are not well known to young people who have grown up in minority communities. Most Hispanic advertising leaders work in their own agencies, and he writes that "it would be much easier to lure more of the best and the brightest into our business if they saw more people who look like them in positions of power."
