    HR.com Press Releases

In large Retail and Hospitality organizations today, Human Resources (HR) departments are dealing with high turnover and low retention challenges. These challenges not only drive down productivity and raise labor costs but cause a variety of other problems in the areas of compliance, scheduling, absenteeism, and alignment.

HR.com, in partnership with Ceridian, human capital management technology leader, investigated the obstacles for HR, specifically in Retail and Hospitality. This recently released research report, “Key Workforce Management Issues Affecting the Retail and Hospitality Industries,” summarizes the findings from the industry study.  The survey targeted only HR professionals in the retail and hospitality industries who work for organizations with 1,000 or more employees.

The report also provides insights to help HR departments address the importance of technology.  Results indicate that Retail and Hospitality organizations with high-performing technology are less likely to have retention problems and compliance issues. They are also more prepared for government audits and legislative changes, compared to lower-performing technology companies.

“Retention is definitely an ongoing challenge for the retail and hospitality businesses.  These industries are typically lacking data and tracking, so it’s not surprising that results point to the necessary adoption of high-quality, real-time technologies to cut down on retention problems and to stay compliant,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com.

Learning and Talent Development are Critical for Successful Digital Transformation according to new research by HR.com and SumTotal.

HR and L&D leaders are strongly positioned to address the inadequate skills development cited as a significant barrier to digital transformation.

BOSTON and AURORA, Ontario – December 4, 2018 – HR.com and SumTotal Systems, a Skillsoft company, today announced the results of joint research that demonstrates learning and talent development are crucial for digital transformation. The majority of the 434 human resources (HR) professionals surveyed indicate that digital transformation is an executive-level initiative, but only about one-third say their organizations have made progress with it.

The research report, The Role of Learning in Digital Transformation, investigates how today’s HR professionals view and facilitate digital transformation in their organization and the factors that contribute to or hinder its development. Digital transformation is defined in this study as “the concept of integrating technology into all areas of the business to effectively keep up in today’s ever-changing digital economy.”

The report provides the following insights and analysis:
    • Assesses the current state of digital transformation
    • Explores whether organizations are prioritizing digital transformation
    • Determines the significant enablers of digital transformation and the barriers to achieving digital maturity
    • Examines the cultural foundations of digital transformation and their impact
    • Explores ways HR and L&D can enable digital transformation
“HR, L&D departments, and formal strategies for learning will be the key drivers of successful digital transformation,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “Organizations without these foundational elements in place won’t get far on their digital transformation journey.”

The research revealed three major areas where successful organizations considered to be digital leaders differ from other companies:
    1. They are actively taking steps towards digitalization to be competitive and successful.
    2. They realize the value of people as the primary movers of digital transformation.
    3. They place more importance on employees’ development in critical thinking, leadership, and innovation than on automation.
“Talent development is pivotal for long-term success and an absolute business imperative amidst rapid and continual transformations due to the pace of technology advances and innovation,” said Chad Gaydos, chief operating officer, SumTotal. “As validated by HR.com’s research, people development must be the single most important priority for HR and L&D professionals in 2019 and beyond as organizations seek to digitize and transform their business—starting with their human capital.”

Download the free report, The Role of Learning in Digital Transformation, and register for a webinar on Digital Transformation Can’t Succeed Without People – and HR. During the webinar on December 13, 2018, Brent Colescott, Sr. Director, Business Strategy & Transformation, SumTotal, will discuss the survey’s results and explain how today’s HR professionals view and facilitate workforce transformation.

Leadership Development Programs Need Updating to Shape Organizations’ Future according to Research from HR.com and Skillsoft.

Research reveals strong demand for more inclusive and continuous leadership training at all levels of the organization.

BOSTON, MA and AURORA, ONTARIO – November 27, 2018 – HR.com and Skillsoft today announced the results of research that shows most organizations lack effective leadership, a problem that stems partly from underperforming leadership development programs. To address this lack of effectiveness in leadership programs, HR departments need to adapt employee training programs to respond to the shifting paradigm of leadership development.

The newly released research report,”Revamping Leadership Development: Gain advantages by modernizing the leadership paradigm,” is based on an industry survey conducted by HR.com in partnership with Skillsoft. The survey gathered 526 responses consisting of HR professionals from a varied representation of organization industries and sizes in the third quarter of 2018.

Findings in the research highlighted the key obstacles to effective and improved leadership development for companies in any industry.  In fact, only one-fifth of HR professionals perceive their managers and executives are effectively leading them, shining a bright light on the need for significant improvement in the area of leadership.  Almost all respondents point to continuous versus sporadic employee development (94%) as well as more inclusive training at all levels (92%), not just at the top.

“Companies are making huge investments in leadership development programs, but they’re not getting enough of a return on their investment,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “Now we need to figure out new ways of delivering leadership development that are both more effective and more efficient.”

The HR study specifically asked participants about what learning modalities they are using.  Results indicated that more than half of well-led organizations are utilizing coaching, mentoring, and elearning methods, pointing HR departments to pursue these modalities in the future in order to ensure their business success.

“As organizations flatten, leadership development must become democratized to ensure that all current and potential leaders master the practices and mindsets needed to excel in today’s rapidly evolving, technology-enabled business context,” said Heide Abelli, SVP, Content Product Management at Skillsoft. “HR.com’s survey findings clearly show that new approaches to leadership development must be pursued, including the greater use of technology to serve up engaging, contextualized and modern content which is accessible in the moment of need. The study shows that continual learning is the key to success versus sporadic, discontinuous approaches to leadership competency development.”

According to preliminary findings from a Human Resource Marketing Institute survey of over 100 HR marketers, marketing efforts in Human Resources (HR) are not as effective as they could be. The results show that 50% of HR marketers report a moderate to low degree of success.

“The HR Marketing Institute will set the bar for success for our industry,” says Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “We’ve been working with HR marketers for the last 19 years.  In our experience, they are truly doing the best they can, but they often lack the key information, research, resources and learning community to support operational excellence.”

McGrath founded the HR Marketing Institute to inspire and educate HR marketers, so they can do their jobs as effectively as possible.   The membership-based HR Marketing Institute model offers:

    • Face-to-face peer group meetings to network and share HR marketing strategies
    • Industry research and best practices in HR marketing
    • Benchmark data to establish base metrics for measuring marketing effectiveness
    • HR marketing case studies and tools
The HR Marketing Institute community will officially be launched at the pre-HR Tech Marketing Matters Event in Las Vegas on 9/10 and 9/11.   At the event, membership-based networks will be formed within marketing specialties and interest areas, including a specialty network for CMO’s or VP’s of Marketing.

Most of today’s organizations are having a hard time filling open job positions quickly and at a reasonable cost, according to a new report released by HR.com. More than two-thirds (68%) of surveyed HR professionals said finding candidates with the right skills was among the most difficult hiring challenges, and, on average, they would not rehire 31% of their recent hires if given the chance to do it again. To address these costly challenges, HR professionals have high hopes for new technologies that will help disrupt the traditional talent acquisition (TA) function.

The newly released research report, How Organizations Identify and Hire Great Talent, is based on an industry survey by HR.com in partnership with the IBM Smarter Workforce Institute, which produces rigorous, global, innovative research spanning a wide range of workforce topics. The survey gathered responses from 555 HR professionals across all major industry sectors.

“Our findings indicate that the challenges facing the talent acquisition function are both broad and deep,” said Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “They’re broad in that they cover a range of issues, such as quality of hire, cost of hire, time-to-fill and regrettable hires. They’re deep in that each one of these challenges comes with its own set of specific issues that require careful attention to detail.”

Quality of hire isn’t the only issue. In fact, organizations are even less confident in their ability to fill jobs quickly enough. Only 25% of respondents rated their talent acquisition function as good or excellent at the time-to-fill a position, and just 37% are good or excellent in the area of cost of hire.

In other words, many organizations are spending too much time and money to hire employees that often turn out to be regrettable. It’s no wonder, then, that HR professionals seem interested in new paradigms, techniques and technologies that could disrupt and dramatically improve the TA function.

The HR study specifically asked participants about what outcomes they would like to achieve through the use artificial intelligence (AI) for talent acquisition and selection. Fifty-seven percent cited the ability to fill open positions more quickly, while 51% want to spend less time sifting through resumes. But they’re not willing to trade quality for speed – 54% want AI to help them improve the match between candidates and jobs.

In short, study respondents are hopeful that AI can simultaneously improve the speed, quality and the overall productivity of the TA process.

When it comes to HR compliance issues, smaller businesses tend to have different priorities compared to larger ones, according to a 2018 report released by HR.com. The study highlights key compliance challenges that HR professionals face in small and medium sized businesses.

The research report, The Compliance Factor, is based on exclusive industry research by HR.com in partnership with Ceridian, one of the world’s foremost providers of human capital management technology. The report is now available for download.

Survey respondents (485 HR professionals in Canada and the U.S.) were asked to rank four potential outcomes of a compliance failure, from highest to lowest concern. The study found that larger organizations are most concerned with the impact on the organization’s future, followed by reputational damage. Smaller ones, however, are most concerned with the potential heaviness of the fine itself.

“Smaller firms tend to have more to lose from large fines,” said Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “A severe fine can put a smaller company out of business. Bigger companies can easily absorb a large monetary fine, so their main concern tends to be the publicity’s hit to the brand, which can potentially cost more than the fine itself in terms of loss of business.”

What makes the situation even more dangerous is that many smaller firms find it hard to stay in compliance. Over a quarter of all survey respondents cited compliance with labor laws as a major challenge, and the problem was somewhat more pronounced for smaller organizations with fewer than 250 employees than for larger ones with over 500 employees.

Results revealed today’s biggest compliance problems. Complex regulatory and legal environment was the biggest obstacle to staying in compliance. For smaller organizations, the risks are often compounded by a general lack of access to critical internal expertise.

Continuous Performance Management Has a Good Reputation But Not Widely Practiced - new research from HR.com & Betterworks.

An exclusive new report released by HR.com found that while nearly 90% of HR professionals agree that a Continuous Performance Management process is superior to an annual or bi-annual review process, only a fraction of organizations are practicing it.

The report, Moving Towards Continuous Performance Management, is based on an industry survey conducted by HR.com in partnership with the enterprise software company Betterworks. The survey gathered responses from 512 HR professionals.

“Performance management has been failing for a long time,” said Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “Now most HR professionals think that one way to improve it is to make it more continuous. But that doesn’t mean most organizations have actually adopted such systems. There’s still a big disparity between belief and action.”

In fact, only about a third of respondents (32%) say their organizations use Continuous Performance Management.

"Today's business leaders and their HR teams are challenged to inspire their workforce to higher performance, identify and retain their top talent and build their leadership pipeline in order to maintain competitive advantage,” said Doug Dennerline, CEO of Betterworks. “the research conducted by HR.com clearly demonstrates that adopting Continuous Performance Management is  a critical part of the solution.”

One potential component of Continuous Performance Management is an employee recognition system. About 60% of participants say their organizations use recognition systems. Those who are pleased with the effectiveness of their better performance management processes are more likely than others to have a recognition program in place.

The study also suggests that performance management is in flux, and that HR pros are actively hunting for technological solutions to help them improve the process. Half of respondents intend to revamp their performance management process over the next two years, while fully 68% said they would prefer to work with a “technology system” that helps remove bias from the performance reviews management process.

Only three out of ten HR professionals think employees in their organizations are satisfied with the career development opportunities available to them, according to a new report released by HR.com. Moreover, only about a third of organizations offer career development opportunities to all employees to a high degree.

This newly released research report, Accelerating Career Development, is based on an industry survey by HR.com, in partnership with BambooHR, a leading provider of HR technology for small and medium-sized businesses. It includes responses from 964 HR professionals.

“HR needs to play catch-up in this crucial area,” said Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “Employers badly need more highly skilled employees, and employees badly want greater career development. Workers know if they don’t develop their skills, they can easily be left behind and become unemployable. So, it’s in everyone’s interest, but career development is still a work in progress for most employers.”

Only a quarter of respondents agreed that their career development programs and practices are top-notch. Even fewer described their programs as highly consistent, efficient, or effective. Although most employers with career development programs review the skills and competencies of employees, only about half discuss possible future career options with them.

Study results reveal what organizations that excel at career development do differently. For one thing, their leaders are much more likely to have the skills required to help employees develop their careers. For another, they tend to use career development metrics such as percent of open positions filled from inside the organization and percent of employees who express satisfaction with development opportunities.
