Most HR professionals say that workplace experiences have become more important in recent years. When asked about their importance to the HR department, fully 72% of HR professionals say the importance of employee experience is very high, and 63% indicate the same thing about the more comprehensive topic of human experience (HX).  Furthermore, nearly half (47%) feel the concept of HX will grow even more important over the next three years.

The free research report, The State of Human Experience in the Workplace 2020, is now available for download.  HR.com's Research Institute conducted the study to better understand employee and human experience and their implications for the future of HR.  HX is defined as the overall experience that all stakeholders have with the organization. This includes employees, contractors, alumni, candidates, customers, business partners, investors, and anyone else who has a strong interest in the organization and its products.

Organizations with a more positive human/employee experience have better workplace outcomes. They assign higher ratings to their perceptions of employees around every experience factor including engagement, empowerment, sense of belonging, and “work inspiration.” In fact, 51% report high levels of ROI from their experience initiatives, versus a mere 7% of those that claim their company is average or worse when it comes to managing their human and employee experience.

“There is so much noise with technology and processes that HR is not as focused on the people aspect as they could be,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “Human experience is fast becoming the number one priority for HR. By devoting more attention to the human experience, HR and top leaders can reinvent human capital management to bring about better business results.”

The vast majority of employers (93%) have pre-hire processes and tools in place, but fewer than half view their tools as good (40%) or excellent (5%). One of the primary challenges in regard to pre-hire technologies is integration, with just 16% saying the components of their pre-hire tools are well-integrated.

The free research report, The State of Pre-Hire Tools and Systems, is now available for download.  HR.com's Research Institute conducted the study to better understand recruitment processes and to examine how HR professionals view the pre-hire tools they are using to help meet their hiring challenges in 2020.

Further investigation reveals the most widely used pre-hire assessments are skills assessment tests (61%), job-related knowledge tests (47%), and personality tests (43%).

Examination of pre-hire leading and pre-hire laggard firms highlight some distinct differences.  Responding organizations that report good pre-hire processes and tools are more likely than their lagging counterparts to:
    • Leverage background screening, assessments, and video interviewing
    • Have integrated systems
    • Say that the advantages of their pre-hire systems are that they provide better candidate experiences, provide useful data for future references, and improve employer branding
    • Report having happier candidates and recruitment staff
    • Leverage skills assessments and assessments of emotional intelligence
    • State that assessment and analytical capabilities will be more important over the next several years
“Integration needs attention. Going into 2020, employers should be focusing on streamlining processes to ensure better integration of individual pre-hire tools and components,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com.

Despite the fact that pay inequities remain a serious challenge to employers worldwide, most organizations are still not making it a top priority.  Only a very small proportion (6%) of human resources (HR) professionals say pay equity is a top priority at their workplace. Further, just a quarter of surveyed employers say it’s among their top five executive priorities, and a third believe executives do not see it as a priority at all.

The free research report, The State of Pay Equity 2020, is now available for download.  HR.com's Research Institute conducted the study to examine the state of how well organizations and HR departments are addressing pay equity issues.

Further examination reveals the main reasons companies do strive for pay equity in their workforce. Three-fifths of HR professionals (59%) say their organizations focus on pay equity to retain the right talent, another half (53%) say they do so to recruit the right talent, and almost as many (47%) say a sense of fairness drives pay equity.

Only two-fifths (40%) of HR professionals consider their organizations to be good or excellent when it comes to pay equity efforts. Companies viewed as more equitable are more likely to:
    • have a formal pay equity budget in place,
    • analyze and leverage data in an effort to increase pay equity and reduce pay gaps, and
    • invest in efforts to close the pay equity gaps across all job levels, not just senior levels.
“While the percentage of those leveraging analytics may feel alarmingly low given the extent of the pay equity problems in today’s workforce, it is reflective of a painful reality: decision-makers are not investing in solving the pay equity problem,” stated Dr. Patti Fletcher, Chief Workplace Equity and Disruption Futurist at HR.com.

Download the full report which includes details on nine key takeaways to help HR departments work to close pay equity gaps in their organization.

Over half of HR professionals believe that financial security is one of the primary struggles faced by employees, yet few organizations have implemented financial wellness programs.  Further investigation points to the concern that most employees struggle with a range of issues at home and work, including financial insecurity.  The most significant struggle for employees is achieving an effective work-life balance (55%), followed closely by earning enough money to pay bills and pay off debt (53%).

The free research report, The State of Employee Financial Wellness, examines the state of employee financial wellness programs and initiatives, and is now available for download.  HR.com's Research Institute conducted the study in partnership with Salary Finance, a company providing financial wellness solutions that help employees move out of debt and into savings at no cost or liability to the employer.

Relatively few (22%) organizations have implemented an employee financial wellness program.  And just 14% of human resource (HR) professionals indicate that their organization successfully helps employees attain greater financial wellness to a very high or high extent.

“Organizations will need to open the lines of communication and audit their current benefits programs to see if they are meeting the needs of their workforce,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “It’s a no-brainer that financial wellness, not just mental and physical wellness, for their employees will translate to business results.”

Few human resources (HR) professionals (37%) say their organizations are good or very good at talent analytics. And nearly as many (34%) say their organizational talent analytics abilities are poor or very poor, calling attention to a lack of confidence and aptitude in analytics in HR.

The free research report, The State of Big Data and Talent Analytics, is now available for download.  HR.com's Research Institute conducted the study to examine the state of how well organizations and HR departments are adeptly leverage talent analytics and big data.

Analytics-leading firms are more likely to have implemented a big-data platform that delivers actionable insights compared to analytics-lagging companies (51% vs 8% agree or strongly agree). They are also more likely to have analytics-savvy HR business partners, have a head of HR involved in analytics work, and have HR systems capable of pulling integrated data.

The research pointed to a lack of analytics ability for HR leaders and managers.  Only 21% of HR professionals say their leaders are very good at making sense of talent analytics.
“Organizations must recognize that educating business leaders on how to make sense of talent analytics is crucial to their success,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com.

Very few human resources (HR) professionals (11%) say their organizations use artificial intelligence (AI) to a high or very high degree.  Fast change is on the horizon for HR, however, as a third (33%) anticipate high or very high use of AI in two years.

Results from the research study, The State of Artificial Intelligence, Disruption and Innovation, are now available for free download.  HR.com's Research Institute conducted the study to examine the state of artificial intelligence in HR and provide insights to prepare for the wave of inevitable AI-based change.

Most human resource (HR) professionals (77%) say their organizations use an Applicant Tracking System (ATS), but only about half (52%) say that their hiring process is good or excellent. It’s clear that the systems are not a recruitment panacea, but their weaknesses can be addressed.

The free research report, The State of Applicant Tracking Systems, and informative infographic are now available for download.  HR.com's Research Institute conducted the study to examine the state of ATS applications in terms of adoption, effectiveness, and possible future trends.

Notable research insights point to a number of weaknesses in ATS utilization for hiring.  Just 30% of HR professionals say their ATS is good or fair at automatically matching candidates to the right job postings and then alerting the recruiter. Only 33% are good or fair at offering candidates a personalized experience.

Looking ahead to the near future, HR participants say they expect to see even greater personalization (62%) and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities (55%).

“It’s after implementing an ATS when companies need to take the more difficult steps to optimize the features and functionality. A commitment to ongoing training, feedback, metrics, and tracking will help maximize the benefits of your ATS and bring strategic advantages,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com.

Nearly two-thirds of HR professionals indicate the gig economy is impacting hiring and staffing practices. A majority (64%) are experiencing some sort of change because of gig economy trends. The research study reveals that companies are impacted in a variety of ways, including requiring careful screening to minimize risk when it comes to recruiting and managing temporary hires, which range from contingent employees to contract workers.

HR.com's Research Institute conducted the research study, Hiring Trends in the Age of the Gig Economy, Identity Fraud, and Social Media, in partnership with Sterling, a leading provider of background and identity services. Insights from the study reveal that companies are changing the way they do work to meet the expectations of the increasing contingent workforce.

In addition to covering the gig economy, the study examines identity verification, drug screening, continuous monitoring, and social media checks—revealing data, insights, and best practices pertaining to each of these rapidly evolving areas.

“With the growing gig economy, identity fraud issues, and changing drug laws, the modern HR team really must be informed, resourceful, and forward-thinking. Among the tools available that maximize safety and minimize risk are continuous monitoring, social media checks, and biometrics scanning,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com.

“As the workplace landscape evolves, screening methods and technologies are continuing to advance and innovate. This whitepaper underscores the need—across many sectors—for effective, accurate, and compliant background checks,” said David Bloom, General Manager, Gig Economy at Sterling. “A comprehensive screening program shapes workplace culture by helping create great environments for workers, partners, and customers.”
